Obituary for Mark A. Berland

Mark A.  Berland
Mark A. Berland, 59, of Iron Mountain, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the DJ Jacobetti MI Veteran’s Facility, Marquette, Mich.

He was born March 10, 1955, in Gary, Ind., son of the late Alton and Bertha (Olson) Berland. Mark grew up in Gary and graduated from high school there. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 6 years before being honorably discharged. Mark married Denise Hooten on October 4, 1980, in Pipe Creek, TX. While living in Texas, he received his Registered Nursing Degree and worked for both the Baptist Memorial Hospital and Veteran’s Hospital in San Antonio, TX. He along with his wife Denise moved to Iron Mountain in July of 1983. While living in Iron Mountain he worked for the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center as a nurse from 1983 until retiring in 1999. He attended Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain.

Mark played football and wrestled in high school and enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid golfer. His passion was serving all of the veterans during his time as a nurse at the VA Medical Center.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Denise; one son, Nicholas Berland, Austin, TX; one daughter, Carley (Oscar Elizondo) Berland, Austin; one brother, Larry Berland, Valparaiso, Ind., and his future grandson, Dominic Elizondo.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 12, 2014, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The Uren-Cooper Johnson American Legion Post No. 50 will accord Military Honors, Saturday, 11:15 a.m. at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Richard Riley will officiate.
