Ken Wangberg

Ken Wangberg and Jeff Peckron were friends in the 1960’s. The photo of Ken came from Winfield Public
School in October of 1961. The teacher was Mrs. Welles. Jeff lived on Gary’s Mill Road and Ken on
Wynwood Road. About 1000 feet apart. We played a lot of softball together.

My favorite Ken story was with him at his Grandfather Leo’s resort at Water’s Meet, MI. The black bears
were in the resort complex raiding garbage cans. Leo was chasing them with 12 foot long bamboo/cane
fishing pole. I was chasing Leo. This was great sport. Everybody in the resort was watching these two
goofy guys trying to intimidate a 300 pound black bear. It worked. The bears took off.

My favorite Elsie story happened one summer day. She was defrosting the refrigerator in the garage.
She had a couple buckets full ice/snow from the freezer in the old refrigerator. I decided have fun. Ken
was my coconspirator. I ran out in the back yard and grabbed a Garder snake. A nonpoisonous specie
with a nasty bite of teeth. I plunged the snake into the bucket of slush. The snake immediately,
stupefied. We were rolling with laughter. It gets better. We called Elsie, she screamed. Then we put the
comatose snake on the hot patio. He “woke up” and slithered off. Elsie shrieked. In spite of this Mrs.
Elsie Wangberg always treated me nicely.

A lost touch with Ken during high school. I stopped at the Wangberg home a few years after graduation.
Elsie informed me Ken had joined the US Air Force. I lost touch with the family. I went on to college,
graduate school and the US Marine Corps. I now live in Tucson, Arizona.
Godspeed to the family.
