Obituary for Fred F. Campbell

Fred F.  Campbell
Vulcan-Fred F. Campbell, 93, of Vulcan, Mich., passed away Friday, October 21, 2016 at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain, Mich.

He was born on April 3, 1923 in Ludington, Mich. Fred was adopted and raised by his grandparents on a rural farm outside of Ludington. He attended Ludington schools and graduated from there. Fred at the age of 12, held a part time job at JCPenney Company, Ludington in the shoe department. He also helped his grandfather on the farm.

Fred married Mary Hartley in 1943 in Ludington. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2007. He served his country in the United States Army from Jan. 5, 1943 until his Honorable Discharge on November 6, 1945. Fred served in active duty in Germany, France and landed on Normandy Beach. He had shared with his family many times his military experiences.

When Fred returned from service he worked for Park Dairy in Ludington, the railroad, Dow Chemical, and the State of Michigan MDOT as a soil and materials technician for 28 years. His job with the State of Michigan enabling him to move to the upper peninsula and he retired from there on June 4, 1984. After retiring he along with his wife took many road trips throughout the country.

Fred was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, Norway, the local 4H horse club, he along with his wife, chaperoned many school dances and was involved with their children’s activities.
Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, reading, hiking, rock collecting, polishing and making jewelry. His children will remember the many camping trips they took in the summer. Fred was always willing to help others, including assisting cancer patients by driving them to Green Bay for treatments, he was a true gentleman. He was a great father to his children and was loved by all who knew him. Fred will truly be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by one son, Fred G. (Jan) Campbell of Breitung Twp.; three daughters, Jan O”Donnell of Chico, Calif, Judy Maynard of Vulcan, Mich. and Connie Campbell (Shari Ellison) of Kingsford, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and one sister-in-law, Evie Hartley.

In addition to his parents, and his wife, Mary, Fred was preceded in death by one granddaughter, one grandson, many brothers and sisters-in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, Norway, Mich. A memorial service will be held Friday, 11:00 a.m. at the church. Pastor Irene White will officiate.
