John Came By

One Friday afternoon while driving my sister Sallie and me on the last leg of the Alpha school bus route from Stager Lake to Club Felix, Gino Frizzo, our bus driver, spotted a fawn curled up by the roadside.  He called our attention to it - we stopped and picked it up.  Gino was troubled because the doe had abandoned her fawn.  He visited with my parents, and after the adults listened to our concern, they agreed to bring it in.  We fed it and kept vigil though the night, but the little fawn died the next morning.

John came by on his motorcycle for a visit that Saturday morning and he found the whole family in mourning over the little fawn.  He suggested to my father that he would take the fawn out into the woods and bury it.  My father had never been a farmer and John assured him that he was up to the task so my father was likely quite relieved by John's suggestion and willingness.

When John returned from his sad duty, he told my father that he discovered glass in the fawn's stomach and that it wasn't our lack of care that caused the fawn to die.  We were all still very saddened, but we were grateful for John's caring.  John was our hero that sad day.  He was a good man and I know there is a special place for good men in God's universe.
