Dale Duff the Singer

Many people thought of Dad as a smart businessman and loving father and husband,  But, I also remember a side of him that some people may have never seen (or heard): the Singer.  He sang out loud frequently, probably a half-dozen (or more) times per day, especially when he was in good spirits.  He rarely sang a song all the way the way through from start to finish, at least at home or in the car, but he did sing his favorite portions of songs with great gusto!  When I heard that he had joined a Barbershop Quartet (Quintet?) as a singer, I was not surprised at all.  He had a strong masculine song tone and a surprisingly wide range, singing songs from low tenor down through baritone, and he was able to achieve a surprising strong volume, when he chose to.

He enjoyed singing Christmas music and I believe two of his favorites were "O Holy Night" and "Silent Night".  When he suddenly began singing the first stanzas of  "O Holy Night", I remember that I would instantly get into mood for Christmas, no matter what my age was!

If I had to pick one song that I believe best captures Dad's life, it would be "My Way" by Frank Sinatra.  He always chose his own path and made his own decisions ... and he always seemed larger than life to me ... and if he ever feared anyone or anything, I can honestly say that I never saw it (or heard it) myself.

To Dad with my sincerest respect and admiration,

Stephen Jeffrey "Jeff" Duff
