Obituary for Lorn E. Johnson

Lorn E.  Johnson
Dr. Lorn E. Johnson, 85, longtime resident of Iron Mountain and Optometrist, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at his home.

He was born April 22, 1929, in Escanaba, Mich., son of the late Earl and Lillian (Swanson) Johnson.

Lorn grew up in Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School, Class of 1947. He attended Western Michigan University and then went on to Optometry School at Chicago College of Optometry, graduating in June of 1952. His Professional Fraternity was Omega Delta and Beta Sigma Kappa. Lorn started his own Optometry practice soon thereafter in Kingsford, Mich; he retired in February of 1999.

He served our country in the Korean War in both the United States Army and Navy. He was stationed in Japan for most of his military career and was honorably discharged on December 12th 1955.

Lorn married Margaret “Magee” Hult on June 30, 1956 in Escanaba; she preceded him in death on November 30, 2012.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club attaining “The Life Fellow and Legion of Honor for 50 Years”. He was also a member of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Masonic Lodge 388, Interstate Shrine Club and the Royal Order of Jesters. Lorn was an active member of the American Optometric Association, serving on the Michigan State Board of Examiners from 1975-1982. He was an advisor for the Dickinson County Water Association ”SKI-TERS”, Intermediate School District School Board, Habitat for Humanity, Chippewa Club, Camp Neverlost member, Pine Grove Country Club, Lake Antoine Association, Dickinson County Wild Life Unlimited and Our Saviors Lutheran Church serving as an usher and on the church council. Dr. Johnson did volunteer work for the DDA, was a member of The Dickinson County Council for the Arts, Dickinson County Development Alliance and traveled numerous years to Honduras for treatment and care of eye diseases.

Lorn is survived by two sons, Neal (Kathy) Johnson, Iron Mountain and Paul (Ruth) Johnson, Minneapolis, MN; two daughters, Lynn Schauls, Frederic, WI and Catherine (John) Blomquist, Iron Mountain; two brothers, David (Roberta) Johnson, Gladstone, MI, Donald (Ruth) Johnson, Escanaba; three sisters, Lois Hultquist, Kingsford, MI, Joan Buckland, Houghton, MI, Carol (Jerry) Ebbesen, Gladstone, MI; two sisters-in-law, Mary Oakes, Muskegon, MI, Karen Nokamura, San Francisco, CA; seven grandchildren, Kristen (Brian) Chapman, Carrin (Matthew) Brookshaw, Nicholas Pedo, Zachery Johnson, Brad Blomquist, Olivia Schauls, Tsuko Johnson; and one great-grandson, Braxton Chapman, along with and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a very gentle, kind, compassionate and articulate man. He always went out of his way for his family, friends and especially his wife during her illness. Lorn was devoted to and loved this community.

Visitation will be held Saturday, December 6, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, 12:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Lori Liverance will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.

A Memorial will be established in Lorn’s memory.

The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain to honor Lorn’s Legacy of Life.
