Obituary for Dick E. Harris

Dick E.  Harris
Crystal Falls-Dick E. Harris, 87, of Iron River, Mich., passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, Mich.

He was born June 16, 1930, in Moorhead, Iowa, son of the late Richard and Fern (Carpenter) Harris. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard from July 1947 until his honorable discharge in July of 1951. For many years he was in the Civil Air Patrol in Dakota City, Nebraska. Dick was united in marriage to Irene Hein on July 8, 1956, in Elk Point, South Dakota. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2016. Dick was a truck driver for most of his life after leaving the Coast Guard, working for Barber Transportation Company, Sioux City, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota and later for Hymen Freight in Fargo, North Dakota. He along with his wife Irene managed apartments from 1987 until 1999 in Fargo. They moved to Iron River, Mich., in 1999.

Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, going to the casino, and in his youth he loved to bowl.

Dick is survived by four daughters; LaDonna Bethke, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sandi (David) Bertsch, Iron River, Mich., Tina (Doug) Herold, Casselton, North Dakota and Linda (Scott) Beverson, Eden Prairie, Minn.; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Irene, Dick was preceded in death by three sisters, Nita Edlund, Itha Hammond and Letha Newman; two brothers, Gale Harris and Neil Harris; a granddaughter, Shantel Herold; and one son in law Abe Bethke.

Burial will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Iowa.
