Obituary for Guy J. Donovan

Guy J.  Donovan
Kingsford-Guy J. Donovan, age 68, of Kingsford, Mich., passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain, Mich.

He was born May 8, 1949, in Escanaba, Mich., son of the late Francis and Lucille (DeGrand) Donovan. Guy attended Escanaba schools until the 10th grade until he went to serve our country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He served from January of 1968 until his honorable discharge in July of 1969. Guy returned to the Escanaba area, and along with working at a few different places, he went on to graduate high school in 1976. He married Lynda Skellenger on August 8, 1980, in Escanaba. Guy worked as a respiratory therapist for St. Francis Hospital, Escanaba, Northern Home Care, Escanaba, and after moving to Kingsford in 1984 he worked as a respiratory therapist for Caring Home Care, Iron Mountain, Mich. He went on to own and operate Tommy’s Tap, Kingsford, Mich. and later went on to work for the 4 Season Resort, Beecher, Wis., becoming its General Manager for 10 years. His last place of employment was Walmart, Iron Mountain, where he worked as a clerk for 6 years.

Guy was a past member of the American Legion and the 40-8. He enjoyed many hobbies, including, hunting, fishing, and shooting guns.

Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Lynda Donovan; three sons, John Carlson, Quinnesec, Mich., Jim Carlson, Iron Mountain, Mich. and Jim Donovan, Escanaba, Mich.; three daughters, Erin (Erik) Biggs, Dearborn, Mich., Rebecca “Becky” (Dave) Phalen, Gladstone, Mich. and Jennifer (Jeff) Brow, Gladstone, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Guy was preceded in death by two brothers, Terry and Michael Donovan and one sister, Renelle McGuigan.

The Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 22, 2017, 11:00 a.m., at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Escanaba, Mich. Rev. Fr. Fran DeGroot will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Escanaba, Mich.
