Obituary for Curtis R. McCumber

Curtis R.  McCumber
Curtis R. McCumber, 82, of Mansfield Township, Mich., passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain, Mich.

He was born July 15, 1934 in Mansfield Township, Mich., son of the late George and Gertrude (Bates) McCumber. Curtis grew up and attended schools in Mansfield Township and Crystal Falls. He was a Veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving his country in the United States Navy from 1953 until 1961. Curtis went on the Honor Flight Mission XI on September 21, 2016 accompanied by his son-in-law, Dan Helms. He was united in marriage to Ruth L. Doers on December 15, 1973.

Curtis worked for Morris Mining in Republic, Mich., before going into business as owner and operator of McCumber Brothers Logging with his brother, Stanley McCumber for over 45 years, retiring in 1993. In his retirement, he enjoyed working side by side with his nephew, John McCumber, repairing automobiles at U.P. Rebuilders.

Curtis enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and watching wildlife.

Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Ruth McCumber; five daughters, Karen (Daniel) Helms, Channing, Mich., Terri Brown, Rhinelander, Wis., Niccole Spade, Marinette, Wis., Kristi (Adam Smart) Bryner, Niagara, Wis. and Tasha McCumber, Menasha, Wis.; eleven grandchildren, Kelsey (Ryan) Boehmke, Crystal Falls, Mich., Jordan Helms, Marquette, Mich., Christian (Holly) Helms, Sagola, Mich., Cherokee (Deb) Helms-Gleason, Negaunee, Mich., Brandi Kohlsmith, Union, Kentucky, Lisa Hooper, Rhinelander, Wis., Jeffrey (Kayla) Hooper, Oconto, Wis., Skyler Spade, Briana Bryner, Kaylee Brown and Kyle Brown; twelve great-grandchildren, Noah Boehmke, Grayson Boehmke, Emberli Helms, Cheyenne Chapman, Walker Chapman, Coltin Chapman, Seere Helms-Gleason, Amelia Helms-Gleason, Hunter Kohlsmith, Mason Kohlsmith, Jordan Legere and Dominick Wozniczka; in-laws, Arlene (Fred) McGraw, Port Washington, Wis., Diane Doers, Belgium, Wis., Sue Doers, Theresa, Wis.; and my numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Curtis, was preceded in death by three sisters, Doris McCumber, Gladys (Onnie) Salo and Alice McCumber; two brothers, Eugene (Jacquelyn) McCumber and Stanley McCumber; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Victor and Jessie Doers; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Victor (Pat) Doers, Allan Doers and Vernon (Virginia) Doers and by one son-in-law, Shane Spade.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Mansfield Pioneer Church, Mansfield Township. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the church. Pastor Lee and Pastor Lori Liverance will officiate. A luncheon will follow at the Mansfield Township Hall.
