Obituary for Frank E. Smith

Frank E.  Smith
Iron Mountain-On August 24, Frank E. Smith passed away peacefully in his home with his family. He was 87. Frank was born in Taunton, Massachusetts in 1929, to Judge Frank E. Smith and Grace (Hanrahan) Smith. Frank graduated from Taunton High School in 1946 and was President of his class. He received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1950. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served for 20 years as a Reserve Officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers retiring with the rank of Major.

He married Alice (Kuhnig) Smith August 20, 1960, in Racine, Wisconsin and honeymooned for 9 months on a sailboat on the East Coast and in the Caribbean. Frank worked in Racine, Wisconsin at Belle City Malleable - Racine Steel for 10 years, leaving as assistant Superintendent. He then worked at Grede Foundry in Waukesha and was transferred to be Superintendent of Grede Foundry in Iron Mountain - Kingsford. Frank started F.E. Smith Castings, Inc., in 1969, and operated the foundry until he sold it in 1996, and started his new venture, Smith Steel, Inc.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice (Kuhnig) Smith, sisters Elizabeth Smith Brownstein of Washington D.C. and Virginia G. Smith of New York, New York, children Frank (Cecilia) Smith III, Andrew (Susan) Smith, Jennifer (Mark) Mitchell, Audrey (Shawn Carlson) Smith, grandchildren Frank IV (Gabrielle), August, Sophie, Charlie, JonPaul, Benjamin and Jack Henry Smith, Conor and Katherine Smith and Jacob and Sarah Mitchell.

He enjoyed serving his community and was on the Dickinson County Intermediate School Board for 18 years serving as President for many years. He was appointed by Governor William Milliken to the Construction Code Commission serving several terms and was appointed by Governor John Engler to the State of Michigan Builders Board where he served as President for the last 2 years of his term. Frank was elected to the Dickinson County Board of Commissioners where he was always on the Finance Committee, except for the years he was Chairman. He was Financial Chairman of the Dickinson County Republican Party for 22 years. Frank was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church as a Parish Council Finance Committee member, CCD teacher and served as an usher until last year.

He enjoyed boating on Moon Lake, sailing on Lake Michigan in his sailboat, the “Ballylanders”, and gardening with his grandchildren as helpers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 27, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain.
