Donald G. Mathena, 87, of Kingsford, passed away Monday, January 18, 2016, at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Hospital, Iron Mountain

He was born November 1, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, son of the late Guy and Viola (Fivecoats) Mathena.

Don grew up in Akron and graduated from Akron High School. He attended a vocational school and became a master sheet metal worker. Don served our country in the United States Marines and after being honorably discharged he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served two duties. He married Shirley Hildreth on April 7, 1961 in Akron; they made their home in Kingsford. Don worked for the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 7, in the area and throughout the Midwest; he retired in 1994.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, was an avid oil and water color painter and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Shirley; four sons, Kenneth (Peggy) Mathena, Appleton, Wis., Guy Mathena, Green Bay, Wis., Dale Ford, Iron Mountain and Jimmy (Cheryl) Mathena, N.C.; two daughters, Suzanne (Danny) Kortenber, Mayer, Ariz. and Kathy Mayer, Ariz; one brother, Glenn Mathena, Kent, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Iris Mathena and one sister-in-law, Ann Mathena.

In accordance with Don’s wishes private family visitation and services were held.
