Obituary for Wilma H. McDonnell (Roche)

Wilma H. McDonnell (Roche)
Wilma Henrietta McDonnell (nee Roche), 85, passed away, Saturday, November 7, 2015, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain, surrounded by the love of family.

She was a resident at the Golden Living Center, Florence, since 2009, after moving there from Royal Oak, Mich. following a serious stroke.

Wilma was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Her family moved to Detroit, where she began school; she later moved to Royal Oak, graduating from Royal Oak High School (Dondero), Class of 1949.

She married postal letter carrier, John “Mack” McDonnell, at the Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church; he preceded her in death in 2005. When her husband re-entered the Navy, they relocated to London, England, before being transferred to Norfolk, Va., where their first child, Cheryl Anne, was born. They moved back to Royal Oak, where Michael Robert was born in 1957.

When the children were young, Wilma worked part-time at the Bloomfield Theatre in Birmingham to earn tuition money to send her children to St. Columban Catholic School. When the children were older, she worked full-time at Answering Service, Inc., in Birmingham, to save money for two college educations (Cheryl at MSU and Michael at WMU). In her later years, she was a school crossing guard for Starr School in Royal Oak.

Wilma is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Ken Sickle), of Green Bay, Wis., formerly of Iron Mountain; son, Michael, of Conn.; three grandchildren, Teresa Brown, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Matthew McDonnell and Sean McDonnell, of New Baltimore, Mich.; three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Brown, Benjamin Glady and Isabella Glady, all of Grand Rapids and numerous nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Wilma’s wishes, a Memorial Service will be held in Lower Michigan. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

The family has chosen the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence to honor Wilma’s Legacy of Life.
