Obituary for Edward H. "Eddie" Gilbert

Edward H. "Eddie"  Gilbert
Edward “Eddie” H. Gilbert, 93, of Florence, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital, Iron Mountain.

He was born May 30, 1922, in Florence, son of the late Oscar and Alversa (Smith) Gilbert.

Ed grew up in Florence and attended school there. He served in the United States Army, with the 957 H.A.M, during WWII serving under General Patton. Ed married Lila Mae Baker, on August 27, 1949; she preceded him in death in 1994. He later married Dorothy Tobey on May 30, 1997; she preceded him in death in 2005.

He worked for the Wisconsin Electric Company as a General Foreman, overseeing all the garages in Milwaukee, Wis. Ed retired in 1981; he returned to Florence and worked as the Road Commissioner for the Town of Commonwealth.

Ed was a life member of the V.F.W. and American Legion in Florence and served as Commander of each organization. He participated in boxing while in the service. ED enjoyed gardening, animals and working on cars. Ed was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

He is survived by one daughter, Denise(Randy) Foltz, Florence; one son, Al (Carol) Tobey, Kingsford, Mich.; one sister, Ellen Demanovich, Lowell, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Brandon Foltz, Florence, Carrie (Sean) Bright and Alan Foltz, both of Wausaukee, Wis.; Kevin Dombrowski, New London, Wis., Dinara Foster and Connan Foster, both of Milwaukee, Josh (Kim) Tobey, Niagara, Wis., Chris (Mary) Tobey, Appleton, Wis.; one daughter-in-law Sally Foster, Milwaukee; ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Gilbert; one sister, Bette Connors; one son, Douglas Foster and one daughter, Phyllis Dombrowski.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 4, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence. The Florence American Legion Meyers-Youngell Post No. 211, will accord Military Honors, Friday, 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Service will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Doug Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Florence.

The family has chosen the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence to honor Edward’s Legacy of Life.
