Obituary for Ellen T. Johnson (Ketola)
Ellen T. Johnson, 104, of Crystal Falls, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
She was born December 10, 1910, in Stambaugh, Mich. daughter of the late Gust and Aino (Walkama) Ketola.
Ellen graduated from Stambaugh High School, Class of 1929. Directly after graduation she began work as a cashier for JC Penney in Iron River, Mich. A few years later she moved to Chicago, Ill. and was employed by Montgomery Ward. Ellen married Theodore Johnson, on January 14, 1939, in Crystal Falls, where they made their home and raised their family. He preceded her in death on November 14, 1968. In her later years, she worked at various retail stores and as a volunteer for the Iron County Medical Care Facility and the local Christian Bookstore.
She was a long time member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Crystal Falls, ECW Auxiliary, and the Crystal Falls Senior Citizen Center. Ellen enjoyed playing cards, bowling, puzzles, knitting and quilting, working in her yard and flowers.
Ellen is survived by one son, Robert (Freida) Johnson, Garland, Tex.; one daughter Mary (James) Barrett, Denmark, Wis.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnson, Garland, Teri (Robert) Yarbrough, Ixonia, Wis., Bonnie Levy, Denmark and Brian (Ann) Barrett, Middleton, Wis.; five great-grandchildren, Hannah and Megan Levy, Allison and Catherine Barrett and Abigail Yarbrough; two step-great-grandchildren, Daniel and Rebecca Yarbrough and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Theodore, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Lilian Olsen, Aila Gabriel, Helen Rucinski and Diana Zambon; two brothers, Toivo Ketola and Ivar Maki; one granddaughter, Kimberly Johnson and grandson-in-law, Todd Levy.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 14, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Crystal Falls. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, 2:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Carolyn Orchard will officiate. Burial will be Tuesday, June 9, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
