Obituary for Robert J. Strang

Robert J.  Strang
Robert J. Strang, 91, of Iron Mountain, passed away Friday, March 6, 2015, at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital, Iron Mountain.

He was born November 1, 1923, in Gary, Indiana, son of the late Ellsworth and Genevieve (Sherry) Strang.
Robert grew up in Gary, Indiana and graduated from Horace Mann High School, Class of 1942. He went on to attend Clemson University and Purdue University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. Bob married Sally Seabright, in Gary in 1946. He married Lois Jones in Iron Mountain on June 25, 1964, and she preceded him in death on January 6, 1999.

Robert entered the U.S. Army in January of 1943, and was honorably discharged in January of 1946. Robert served with the Amphibious Engineers and was a member of the Assault Team that landed on Utah Beach during the invasion of Normandy on “D-Day”. He participated in numerous battles throughout the European Theatre. Robert was decorated with two Bronze Stars and received the “Good Conduct” medal and the “Victory” medal. Robert began working for Lakeshore Engineering (Oldenburg Group) in 1959, and retired in 1988. During his tenure, he designed mining and marine deck equipment.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, traveling, gardening, the outdoors and the annual family fishing trip at Fortune Lake, which began in 1932 and continues today. Robert loved traveling to Florida every year where he took up golf at the age of 80.

Robert is survived by four sons, Eric (Lori) Strang, Rockford, Mich., Robert (Susan) Strang, Iron Mountain, Tom Strang, Green Bay, Wis. and Paul (Val) Strang, Fallston, Md.; three daughters, Kathy (Bill) Greenwell, Abington, Md., Lori (Greg) Sorensen, Iron Mountain and Suzy (Jeff) Homola, Incline Village, Nev.; two nephews, Jack Strang, Oakdale, Calif. and Bill Strang, Duluth, Ga.; one niece, Carol (Kevin) Hodney, Boston, Mass.; nineteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Robert will also be missed by his loving companion, Alyce Derwinski, Kingsford, Mich.

In addition to his parents and wife, Lois, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ellsworth Strang and one sister, Betty Ormsby.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 13, 2015, 3:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Iron Mountain. Rev. Geri Hamlen will officiate.

The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain to honor Robert’s Legacy of Life.
