Virginia E  Takala (Masson)
Virginia E. Takala, 86, of Escanaba, Mich. formerly of Crystal Falls, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015, at the Bishop Noa Home, Escanaba.

She was born June 15, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., daughter of the late Matthew and Elizabeth (Gorro) Masson.

Virginia grew up in Chicago and during her high school years worked for Bell Telephone Company. She married Reino Takala on September 9, 1948 and he preceded her in death in 2006. Virginia worked for the Lake Shore Country Club, Highland Park, Ill and Jewel-Osco grocery store. She moved to Crystal Falls, where she worked as a Dietary Supervisor at Crystal Manor in Crystal Falls. Virginia was later assigned the Dietary Supervisor at the Wyoming Women’s State Prison, Goshen, Wyo. She moved to Escanaba in 2006, after her husband’s death.

She was an active member in several productions of the Crystal Falls Musical, Guardian Angels Catholic Church as a Eucharistic Minister and choir member, St. Anne Parish, Escanaba as a lector. Virginia volunteered for hospice, at Holy Name School and the OSF Auxiliary all in Escanaba and was an advocate for Right to Life groups in both Escanaba and Crystal Falls. She was a member of Joe’s Club Parachute Jumpers where she was ranked third in the Jumper’s Over 80 category. When she was in her 70s she went white water rafting down the Colorado River. In 2004, she visited Alaska and would have gone back in a heartbeat. Virginia also visited Vienna and saw the Austrian Alps. She loved to travel and considered herself a people person. Virginia enjoyed reading mysteries.

Virginia is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Dennis) Linhart, Lawrenceburg, Ind.; two sons, Wayne Takala, Escanaba and Douglas Takala, Crystal Falls; three grandchildren, Matt (Robin) Takala, Melanie Cryderman and Sara Crow and six great-grandchildren, Lily, Laura, Malachi, Charlotte, Kassidy and Leah.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Reino, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter and Mathew Masson.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 7, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. Prayers will be recited Saturday, 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Crystal Falls. Rev. Fr. Ray Valerio will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls in the spring.

The family has chosen the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls to honor Virginia’s Legacy of Life.
