Obituary for Carmen Elizabeth "Mella" Korpi (Schiavo)

Carmen Elizabeth "Mella"  Korpi (Schiavo)
Carmen E. “Mella” Korpi, 91, of Crystal Falls, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Northstar Health System, Iron River.

She was born April 2, 1923, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Pietro and Elizabeth (Pedranzan) Schiavo.

Carmen grew up in Crystal Falls and attended school there. She married Charles Korpi on July 20, 1946, in Crystal Falls and he preceded her in death on October 7, 1996. Carmen was an active member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church.

She prepared children to receive their First Holy Communion for years. Carmen also held many offices with the women VFW Auxiliary, serving as their president for a number of terms. She was fondly referred to as the “Pizza Queen” by the staff of WIKB’s Telephone Time.

Carmen is survived by three sons, Chuck (Gail) Korpi, Kingsford, Mich., Alvin Korpi, Crystal Falls and Kenneth Korpi, Crystal Falls; two daughters, Lynne (Charles) Zeleznik, Gwinn, Mich. and Laura (Paul) Rodrigues-DeMiranda, Holiday, Fla.; five sisters, Ida Nelson, Crystal Falls, Ange Mindok, Crystal Falls, Olga (John) Cocco, Carney, Mich., Veronica Malecha, Mount Prospect, Ill. and Anita Smith, Albuquerque, N.M.; ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband Charles, she was preceded in death by seven brothers, Clarence, Lawrence, Albino, John, Ceasar, Carmello and Peter.

Visitation will be held Monday, February 2, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. Prayers will be recited, Monday, 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, 11:00 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Crystal Falls. Fr. Ray Valerio will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in the spring.

The family has chosen the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls to honor Carmen’s Legacy of Life.
