Obituary for Joan M. Skogg (Slinger)

Joan M. Skogg (Slinger)
Joan Marie (Slinger) Skogg, 81, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully, Wednesday January 21, 2015, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain.

She was born April 5, 1933, in Duluth, Minn., daughter of the late Joseph and Violet (Anderson) Slinger. It was an adventurous beginning; her grandmother delivered her at the house during a snowstorm. Joan was placed in a cigar box in a warm oven as a make-shift incubator; she was premature and weighed only 3 lbs. 10 oz.

Joan’s parents had one other baby, a girl named Carol Jean, who lived only four months. As a child it was evident that Joan could sing; she developed that talent throughout her life. She graduated from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Class of 1951. At age 21, she spent the summer in Chautaugua, New York performing in operas with the Julliard School of Music Chorus. In later years Joan was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church Choir, Iron Mountain, the Community Chorus and the Community Theatre. She enjoyed participating in numerous plays and musicals. For seven years Joan was the soloist for the Northwood Symphonette under the direction of Leonard Styberski. Most notably, she directed several musical programs for charitable causes, among them “The Love of Giving” and “Music of the Time.”

She married George Alan Skogg on June 15, 1957, in Duluth. They shared the joys and challenges of raising five children. Though they both lived in Duluth their whole lives, they relocated to Kingsford, Mich. in 1970. They were active members of the community and of First Presbyterian Church for many years. This past summer they celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Joan was widely recognized in the community because of the many years she worked at Shopko. She made many life long friendships during that time. Joan’s friends and family will remember her kind and giving nature. She was hardworking, spirited and enjoyed socializing over card games. Joan will be treasured and missed by us all.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, George; her five children, Kathy Hiebert, Tim Skogg, Greg Skogg, Cyndi Iten and Dan Skogg; her dog Lucky; twelve grandchildren, Wesley, Michelle, Joel and Nathan Hiebert, Kristopher, Joshua, Nicky and Audrey Skogg, Ashley Boye, and Abigail, Kaleb and Rachel Louis, one great-grandson, Noah Boye; her beloved Aunt Doris Myhrman and many other friends and relatives.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by one young sister.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Kingsford. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery, Duluth.

Joan cherished the time she spent at Victorian Pines Assisted Living since August, 2013. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff and residents for their care and friendship.

Memorials can be made to Family Ties Adult Day Care, 800 Crystal Lake Boulevard, Iron Mountain, MI 49801

The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain to honor Joan’s Legacy of Life.
