Elizabeth R. "Betty"  Kron (Chylek)
Elizabeth “Betty” R. Kron, 97, of Florence passed away, Friday, November 28, 2014, at the Golden Living Center, Florence.

She was born September 26, 1917, in Raton, New Mexico, daughter of the late John and Agnes Chylek.

Betty grew up in Florence and graduated from Florence High School, Class of 1934. She went on to attend Teachers College in Stevens Point, Wis., where she received her Bachelors in Education in 1936. Betty came back to the area to teach in Fern, Wis. at the town hall and later Florence Primary School. She received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Northern Michigan University. Betty taught summer school in Milwaukee at St. Colletta’s School where she taught Special Education. She returned to Florence in 1945, and was instrumental in implementing the Special Education program in the Florence School District. She was active in the teachers union. Betty retired in 1983.

She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence where she taught catechism, distributed communion to the shut-ins, served on the Altar Society and was Chairman of the Cemetery Committee. Betty did volunteer work, such as driving people to the hospital, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She resided in Florence until 2005, when she lost her eye sight, she then moved to Escanaba, Mich. to be closer to her brother.

Betty enjoyed reading, music and was passionate about helping the special education students of the district.

She is survived by one brother-in-law, Harry Bullington, Monee, Ill. and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband Roy, she was preceded in death by three brothers, William Chylek, John Chylek and August Chyleck and three sisters, Rose Greenberg, Carmen Bullington and Lillian Sieh.

Visitation will be Saturday, December 6, 2014, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11:30 a.m. at the church. Rev. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in the spring.

The family has chosen the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence to honor Betty’s Legacy of Life.
