Obituary

Iron Mountain-William B. "Red" Hicks, 92, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Dickinson County Healthcare system, Iron Mountain. He was born September 2, 1924 in Iron Mountain, son of the late William M. and Agnes (Bauldry) Hicks. Red graduated from Iron Mountain High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. While serving on the LST 531 during Exercise Tiger, his ship was torpedoed and sank. Red was one of the few survivors from his ship and was assigned to another ship and participated in the invasion of Normandy, after which he was assigned to the Pacific Theatre. On the occasion of the 60th Anniversary, he was invited to return to England by the German TV for a documentary. On May 8, 1948 at St. Mary St. Joseph Catholic Church, Iron Mountain, Red was united in marriage to Lorraine Bianchetti. Red was employed by WE Energies for 39 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of LST Association, American Legion Post #50 and the U.C.T. Silver Service Club of WE. He was a past member of the Pine Grove County Club and the IBEW. Red enjoyed playing softball, golfing, hunting, spending time at camp and traveling. He played in the Swede-Cousin Jack games. Red was an avid Iron Mountain Mountaineer fan and was involved in the erection of the poles and lighting at Mountaineer Stadium as well as helping in the renovation of the new locker room, along with coach Tom Wender. He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine Hicks, Iron Mountain; one son, Stephen (Shelly) Hicks; two grandchildren, Ellie and Collin; two brothers-in-law, Mervin Bianchetti and John (Donna) Bianchetti; several nieces and nephews; and by numerous cousins. In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Reino; one brother, Harold Hicks; two sisters-in-law, Joanne Hicks and Anita Andreini; and by one brother-in-law, August Andreini. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The American Legion Uren-Cooper Johnson Post #50 will accord Military Honors at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Prayers will be recited following the veteran's service. Funeral Mass will be celebrated, Wednesday, February 1, 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary St. Joseph Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Rev. Fr. Janusz Romanek will officiate. Entombment will take place at Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association in his memory.
