Obituary

Walter Sulasalmi CRYSTAL FALLS — Walter G. Sulasalmi, 91, of Crystal Falls died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Crystal Manor Nursing Home in Crystal Falls. Walter Gabriel Sulasalmi was born June 1, 1911, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Anna (Longsure) and Gabriel Sulasalmi. He had 11 siblings, five sisters, Celia, Inga, Elvira, Irene and Esther, and six brothers, Arnie, Eino, and four brothers who died at birth. Walter attended school near Amasa. He then went to work on the family farm. He also worked in the local mines and in the woods before taking a position with Bancroft Dairy where he worked for many years. Walter lived locally all of his life. He retired at age 62. He enjoyed socialization and being with people. Walter was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 40 years. He is of the Finnish Lutheran faith. He remembered with pride his achievement in handcrafted projects while he was in school. Leisure time activities also included visiting friends and family, and woodworking projects such as making sleds and skis. He also enjoyed repairing automobiles. Walter married Myrtle Lindquist of Crystal Falls, in 1935. She preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2002. He and Myrtle had one child, Patricia K. Reed of Green Bay, who preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 2001. He is survived by two granddaughters, Tru (Charles) Paschke of Green Bay, Wis., and Sally Sliva of Portage, Wis., and his son-in-law, Richard Reed of Green Bay. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home in Crystal Falls. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
