Iron Mountain: Walter "Mickey" Olson age 72, of Iron Mountain passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 5, 2006, at his home in Iron Mountain.
Walter was born on June 19, 1933, in Crystal Falls, Michigan, son of the late Walter and Linda (Cervo) Olson. He enlisted in the Navy in October of 1951, and served as a Machine Apprentice on the USS Jeffers in the Korean War. He was very proud to be a Veteran and displayed his pride wherever he went. He worked on the Chicago & North Western Railroad as an Agent Operator, Fire Man, and Switch Man after his service in the Navy. He then worked at Crystal Kitchens as a Salesman and later was a Store Manager in Negaunee, Michigan. He also served as an EMT in Iron County.
In his earlier years he loved to be at camp with his family and spend time in the woods. He also liked to travel, and being a very colorful individual, he always managed to make a friend wherever his travels took him. He was a life member of the American Legion of Escanaba, Michigan.
Mickey married Mary Jane Riverside on June 13, 1960. They were married for over 19 years and had a large family.
Mickey is survived by all of his children, Bradley Schultz, Pat (Kim) Olson, Kathy Hanson, Michael (Carmen) Olson, Charlie (Lisa) Olson, Carrie (Barry) Duke and Jenni (Bill) St. John. Other survivors include his ex –wife Mary Jane Soderberg; his brother James (Jane) Olson; ten grandchildren, Summer, Krystle and Samantha Olson, Barry and Kassie Duke, Dean Sleik, David and James Olson, Riley and Kensie St. John; and one niece Linnea Olson.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 10, 2006, from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The Uren-Cooper-Johnson Post 50 of Iron Mountain, will offer full military honors 10:45 a.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Ray Valerio will officiate.
