Volney Ray Vassar Jr., 84, of Florence, Wis., passed away Sunday, August 29, 2010 in Crystal Falls, Mich.
He was born January 11, 1926, son of the late Volney Ray Vassar Sr. and Lillian (Nelson) Vassar in Alpha, Mich. Volney grew up and attended school in Florence. He served in the United States Navy from 1946 until 1955 when he received an honorable discharge. He married Rose Jones. They were married for 37 years. He and Rose lived in Milwaukee where he worked as a machinist.
Volney was a member of the American Legion Post No. 211 and the Florence County V.F.W. Post No. 3635, Florence. He enjoyed spending his time fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his special friend of many years, Florence Ponchaud; one son, Volney A. "Ponch" (Cheryl) Ponchaud, Crystal Falls; two daughters Glenrose (Jerry) Fatturi, Crystal Falls, Leona Schneider; three sisters, Lois DuCharme, Mena, Ark., Linda (Morris) Erickson, New Hampshire, Valeria Fraumeni, Kingsford, Mich.; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Volney was preceded in death by his wife Rose; three brothers, Jack Vassar, Terry Vassar, Renolds Makela; four sisters, Marian Anderson, Edna Woods, Shirley Peterson, Nel Hogan; and one great-grandson.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 2, 2010, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence. The American Legion and V.F.W. will accord military honors at 2:15 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Thursday, 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Florence.
