Crystal Falls- Volney A. "Ponch" Ponchaud, 75, of Crystal Falls, Mich., passed away Saturday, June 22, 2024, at his home.

He was born June 8, 1949, in Iron Mountain, Mich., son of the late Volney and Florence (Snodie) Vassar. Ponch grew up in Crystal Falls, Mich. He proudly served as a sergeant in the United States Army from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1980. Ponch proudly served two tours in Vietnam. After his time in the service, Ponch drove a semi in Clarksville, Tenn., before moving back to Crystal Falls in 1987, where he drove a truck for L.R. Vincent. He later started a repair shop called A & B Automotive, that he ran out of his house.

Ponch married Cheryl Cheney on November 8, 1969, at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls.

He was a Harley member of the Shiny Side Up group, the Combat Vets Motor Cycle Association, and was a life-member of the DAV Chapter 23 and VFW Post #3674 of Iron Mountain.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Cheryl Ponchaud; two sons, Aaron (Marnie Gilligan) Ponchuad of Crystal Falls, Mich., and Brad Ponchaud of Lomira, Wis.; one daughter, Laurieann Hernandez of Crystal Falls, Mich.; three grandchildren, Cody (Meegan), Chase (Angela) and Casey; two sisters, Glenrose Fatturi, Crystal Falls, Mich., and Johnene (Clayton) Anderson, Humboldt Junction, Mich.; many nephews, and by his dog, Izzybella.

In addition to his parents, Ponch was preceded in death by one brother, John; a grandson, Anthoney Hernandez, and one brother-in-law, Jerry Fatturi.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 1, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls, Mich. The DAV Chapter 23 and the VFW Post #3674 of Iron Mountain will offer a Veterans service at 3:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Monday, 4:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Pastor Vicky Prewitt will officiate.
