Obituary

Vida Elizabeth Zellmer, 96, peacefully passed away on March 22, 2011, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls. Vida, whose name means Life, indeed lived a long full Life. And how she loved telling stories about it! She was born in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Felix and Mary Ann (Doucette) St. Louis. Vida, the youngest of 16 children, loved telling stories about her youth, "almost 100 years ago!" she would add. Her first husband, James Rhodes, died an early unexpected death and she was left to raise four children. Vida was quite proud that she did "a pretty good job" and loved telling stories about her children. She outlived her other two husbands, Scott Hazelberg and Edward Zellmer and pursued her passions of travel, angels, and roses. She loved telling stories about her visits to Hawaii, the East Coast, and Florida. Vida collected angels of all sizes and materials and had a story to tell about each one of the over 100 she had on display. Vida appreciated flowers, she most particularly loved roses. Rose plates, rose quilts, rose sheets, and rose cups filled her home. She loved dancing, especially the polka, and up until age 95 could still skunk you at cribbage. Vida loved dressing up with fine clothes, fancy jewelry, and to the end enjoyed wearing a variety of wild hats! She was described as the "feisty little lady with life" who "told it like it was", and told it with some of her lengthy ribald jokes! She is survived by her three sons, Jerry (Emily) Rhodes, Green Bay; James (Sharon) Rhodes, Green Bay, Ronald Rhodes, Crystal Falls; grandchildren, Robbie, Todd, Jeff, Lisa, Jerry, Paul, Lynn, Jody, and Bryan; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two nieces, Marge Small, Marquette, Marie (Harry) Frantz, Fla.; many great nieces, nephews, and friends. Vida was preceded in death by her three husbands; her nine brothers and six sisters; her daughter, Marlene Frank; and nephew, Hughie Frank. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2011, 1:30 p.m. at Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
