Obituary

Vernie J. Smith II, 79, of Iron Mountain, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013, peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. He was born August 18, 1934, in Amasa, Mich., son of the late Vernie and Ethel (Palmer) Smith. Vernie resided in Iron River for many years before moving to Iron Mountain in 1974. He married Belinda Peterson on August 15, 1980, in Iron Mountain. Vernie worked for the Chicago and Northwestern and Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years retiring in 1996. He will be remembered by many for his motor route delivering newspapers for the Daily News for 11 years retiring in September 2012. Vernie worked as a maintenance man for 4-H Camp Molinare for many years. He enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, hunting and collecting various items. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Vernie always offered a helping hand to anyone in need. Vernie is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Belinda; one son, Vernie (Kim) Smith III, Iron Mountain; one daughter, Jolin Honkala; two sons, Michael and Marty Peterson; one brother, Stanley (Shirley) Shoemaker, Chicago, Ill.; six grandchildren, Tim Smith, Oconto, Wis., Connie Honkala, Iron Mountain, Jereme Smith, Iron Mountain, Paige Smith, Rhinelander, Wis., Britny (Andy Cabrera), Jordan (Megan) Peterson, Iron Mountain; three great-grandchildren, Sloan Cabrera, Iron Mountain, Logan Smith, Rhinelander, Ava Peterson; he was a grandfather figure to Olivia and Emma Brasure, Niagara, Wis., and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Vernie was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rae Marie; four brothers, Ted, John, Louie and Otis Smith; two sisters, Pelto Wallo and Obilia Hansen. Visitation will be Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain.
