Vera Hawks, 91, of Crystal Falls, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at the Iron River Care Center, Iron River. She was born April 6, 1918, in Crosby, Minn., daughter of the late Peter Rizor and Edna Spletstozer Peterson. Vera grew up in Deerwood, Minn. She married Orval Hawks on February 12, 1945, in Crosby. He preceded her in death on July 5, 2001. Vera and Orval moved to Crystal Falls in 1967. She was very active in gardening, canning, yardwork, sewing, fishing, and enjoyed going to rummage sales. Vera enjoyed spending time with her cats and dogs and especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She worked at Bishop's Floral and loved flowers and plants. She is survived by two sons, Bob (Sandy) Hawks, Blaine, Minn., Dale (Weewee) Hawks, Crystal Falls; one daughter, Pat (Dee) Schindler, Crystal Falls; five grandchildren, Todd Hawks, Brad (Kathy) Hawks, Stephanie Hawks, Lindsey Hawks, Paul Hawks; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Wyatt, and Marshall Hawks; one sister-in-law, Dods Peterson, Crosby; many other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Orval Hawks; one brother, Earl Peterson; two sisters, Erna Nyberg and Olive Jacobson.
