Obituary

Vance G. Freeberg, 73, of Homestead passed away, Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at his home. He was born on July 12, 1938, in Centralia, Ill., son of the late Karl and Ardith (Tomlinson) Freeberg. Vance was raised in Kingsford, Mich. at a young age before moving to Homestead. He went on to graduate from Florence High School. Vance was in the United States Navy for 14 ½ years serving on the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS Bennington. He married Frances Lecnor on October 5, 1974, in Kingsford. They resided in Kingsford a couple of years before moving to Iron Mountain, Mich. where they resided for over 20 years. In 1999, they moved to Homestead. Vance worked for the Niagara Paper Mill in the Coating Plant for over 20 years, retiring in 2002. He enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, camping, the outdoors, riding his motorcycle and was talented enough to build his own trike. Vance thoroughly enjoyed the many hours that he spent with his best friend and companion, his cat Mia. He was a member of the Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club of Iron Mountain and the Florence VFW Post No. 3635. He is survived by his loving wife, Frances; his children, Tammie (Sena) Roberts, Alaska; Lance Roberts, Alaska; Candy (Steve) Wilke, Omro, Wis.; two brothers, Gary Freeberg, Homestead and Ernie (Kim) Freeberg, Breitung Township; twelve grandchildren, Robert, J.J., Jimmy, Dalton, Misti Dawn, J. P., Justin, Jantina, Danielle, Caitlyn, Lauren and Jenna; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Vance was preceded by one infant sister. Visitation will be Thursday, May 31, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. Matt Settle will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Commonwealth, Wis. The Florence VFW Post No. 3635 will accord military honors at graveside. A memorial will be established in Vance's memory.
