Obituary

Illinois- Timothy D. McLain, 72, of Sycamore, Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2020, at Rush Medical Center, Chicago Illinois. He was born May 11, 1947, in Chicago, son of the late Robert and Charlotte (Durley) McLain. Tim grew up in Chicago and was a graduate of Quigley Preparatory Seminary South High School in Chicago, class of 1965. Tim proudly served the United States Army for nearly 40 years as an officer and as an Army Civilian. He joined the Army less than one year after graduating from high school, and proudly volunteered for two tours in Viet Nam. Tim served as an officer up until his retirement as a Major (USAR) in 1983. He continued to serve the Army Reserve as an Army Civilian until his retirement in 2007. In addition to Tim's love for his country, he also cherished his Catholic faith and family. Making time for God was a significant priority in Tim's life, so much so that he even considered becoming a priest and later taught Religious Education for several years at Saint Isidore Church. He also enthusiastically helped prepare for Masses on drill weekends, always volunteering to read and lead in song and looked forward to assisting the chaplain in any way possible. Tim had an obvious passion for both learning and teaching; he was very interested in literature and history and taught an extra-curricular book club, that focused on the classics, at his daughter's elementary school. He took the opportunity to teach and inspire his colleagues in the military, and also enjoyed lecturing and speaking at his grandchildren's' school about his experience in the military and what it means to be a veteran. He was even the guest speaker at one of their school's Veteran's Day ceremonies. Tim enjoyed dedicating time to several interests outside of his career. He had a passion for reading and specifically enjoyed books written about military history, and those written by James Patterson. Tim also possessed great skill and talent in playing the trumpet and singing. He was very much entertained by military films, old-Western movies, NCIS episodes, and - of course - couldn't bear to miss Jeopardy at 3:30 pm every weekday. Last, but not least, everyone who knew Tim could never forget his puns and jokes. They may not have always been as funny as he thought they were but were nonetheless a very meaningful and significant part of his personality. Survivors include his loving wife, Leidelia Aparicio McLain, Sycamore, Illinois; one daughter, Kelly Schieler (Bryan), Palatine, Illinois; two grandchildren, Isabella and Kellan Schieler, several sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and many wonderful nieces, nephews and great-nieces/nephews. In addition to his parents, Tim was preceded in death by two brothers, James McLain and Rev. Michael McLain; and by one sister, Mary Jane McLain-Martin. A graveside service will be announced at a later date. Burial will be in Fence Cemetery, Fence, Wis. You may leave a condolence or tribute for Tim's family online at www.JacobsFuneralHomes.com. The family has chosen the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home and Crematory, Florence, Wis., to honor Tim's legacy of life.
