Obituary

Sulo Samuel Alongo, 87, of Amasa died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain. Sam was born Sept. 1, 1914, in Amasa, son of Isaac and Helena Alongo. He grew up in Amasa and graduated from Amasa High School in 1931 and played basketball. He was known to most local residents as "Sam the Barber." Sam served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 until 1946. During his time in the service, he was a barber in Guam. He cooked for many years in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Sam attended barber school in Detroit. He cut hair in Highland Towers and Plaza Barber Shop in Detroit area. After moving back to Amasa he continued cutting hair until his retirement. He was a member of Sion Lutheran Church in Amasa and a life member of the Tufts-Rondon Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2891 of Crystal Falls. Sam was a pilot of small planes, an accordion player, and a member of the Amasa Horseshoe League, where he was champion in 1980. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Sam is survived by a son, Gene (Mary) Alongo of Ray Township; a daughter, Betty (Michael) Buchholz of Ray Township; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Isaac; mother, Helena; stepfather, John Orquist; daughter, Nancy; four brothers, Raino, Eino, Uno and Arvo, and a sister, Alice. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home in Crystal Falls and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at Sion Lutheran Church in Amasa. The Eastside Veterans Council will conduct a pass and revue at 10:45 p.m. Thursday at the church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Rev. Thomas Mackey will officiate. Burial will be in Hematite Township Cemetery in Amasa. A full color guard will be presented at graveside.
