Sophie M. McCormick, 94, of Amasa, passed away Monday, September 28, 2009, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
She was born May 27, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., daughter of the late George and Rose (Yalefsky) Wisniewski. Sophie married James McCormick on April 17, 1943, in Chicago. He preceded her in death in 1998.
Sophie and James resided in Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle during World War II while James served in the military. After returning to Chicago in 1945, she worked in the dry cleaning business and later as a production supervisor for a large drapery manufacturer.
She and Jim moved to Amasa in 1973. While in Amasa, Sophie was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, Jim, gardening, local and national politics, and spending time with her family and friends. Sophie also enjoyed sewing her own clothes and drapes for her home.
Sophie is survived by her son, James R. (Donna) McCormick, III, Hagerstown, Ind.; two sisters, Grace Szymanski, Chicago, Rita (Harry) Tabernacki, Chicago; one granddaughter, Sara (Matt) Nowlin, Bloomington, Ind.; a special cousin, Paul (Susanne) Szczepkowski, Chicago; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Eulalia Wisniewski, Lu Gorney, Sue Boguslowski, Tillie Szymanski; four brothers, Charlie, John, Tom, and Adam Wisniewski.
