Iron Mountain-Shirley R. Mathena, 84, of Kingsford, Mich., passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain, Mich. She was born September 25, 1935, in Barberton, Ohio, daughter of the late William and Freda (Shaffer) Hildreth. Shirley worked at Dickinson County Hospital for many years in Housekeeping. She was united in marriage to Donald Mathena on April 7, 1961 in Akron, Ohio. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2016. Over the years Shirley enjoyed many hobbies including going to rummage sales, fishing, crocheting, and especially time spent with her family and friends. Survivors include four sons, Kenneth (Peggy) Mathena, Appleton, Wis., Guy Mathena, Suamico, Wis., Dale Ford, Iron Mountain, Mich., and Jimmy (Cheryl) Mathena, North Carolina; three daughters, Suzanne (Danny) Kortenber, Mayer, Arizona, Kathy Mayer, Arizona, and Mary Jo (Mack) Barron, Goodyear, Arizona; one half-sister, Cindy Lucas; 18 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Donald, Shirley was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. In accordance with Shirley's wishes, private family services will be held.
