Russell G. Oien, 89, of Crystal Falls, died Wednesday May 16, 2007, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
He was born September 20, 1917, in Gwinn, son of the late Louis and Ethel (Blomquist) Oien. On December 15, 1945, he married Isabelle Pepin in Gwinn and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2006.
Russ graduated from Gwinn High School, class of 1935 and Michigan State University in 1939. Also in 1939 he was a forester with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a veteran of WW II having served in the United States Army Air Force and received his honorable discharge in 1946 at the rank of captain. Russell was a conservation officer for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and retired in 1977 after 32 years of service. He was an avid Tigers and Lions fan, enjoyed fishing, sports and was a member of the Grant-Nyman V.F.W. Post No. 5014, Republic.
Survivors include his wife, Isabelle Oien, Crystal Falls; two daughters, Peggy (Robert) Lahtela, Republic, Ginny (David) Neuman, Hazelhurst, Wis.; four grandchildren, Beth Lahtela, Hillsboro Beach, Fla., Brian (Grace) Lahtela, Green Bay, Wis., Dr. Heather Neuman, New York, N.Y., Kevin (Elizabeth) Neuman, Stevens Point, Wis.; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Paige and Taylor Lahtela; one sister-in-law, Lucylle Oien, Gwinn, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lloyd and Glenn Oien.
Visitation will be Friday, May 18, 2007, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, Crystal Falls. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. Cheryle Spicer will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls with military rites accorded by the V.F.W. Post of Republic.
