Iron Mountain:
Roy E. "Buck" Miller Jr. age 83, formerly of 845 East F Street, Iron Mountain, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2004, at Freeman's Convalescent Home in Kingsford, MI.
He was born October 10, 1920, in Seattle, Washington, son of the late Roy Everett and Louise (Hobein) Miller.
Upon graduation from Franklin High School in Seattle, he spent a year in construction work in Alaska. After a year at the University of Washington, he graduated in 1943, from Iowa State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
Mr. Miller served as an officer in the United States Navy in World War II. At the close of the war he was a Lieutenant JG, and was Commanding Officer of the USSPC 1229.
Upon returning to civilian life, he worked in Los Angeles and took post graduate work at UCLA. From there he went to Pennsylvania to enter the coal mining and sales business in partnership with his father. At this time, in 1949, he married Jane Fay in Nevada, Iowa. In 1953, he joined the Michigan Dairy Corp, in Crystal Falls. This company later became Vacationland Dairy Co-op under Mr. Miller's management. In 1955, Mr. Miller acquired the former Miench Construction Corp., and organized Miller Products and Supply. In 1983, he sold this business to Fayas Brothers, and retired.
Throughout his life, Mr. Miller was involved with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Cub Scout in the 1920's in Seattle where Cub Scouting was just originating, and he ultimately became an Eagle Scout. He finally received the Silver Beaver award for volunteer work in Pennsylvania.
He was a long time member of the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He participated in Masonic Orders, including Shrine, the Dickinson County Development Corporation; and was on the original Michigan State Construction Code Commission.
He served as a member of the Republican State Central Committee, and was Finance Chairman of the Dickinson County Republicans for about twenty years. He served on the Michigan State Board of the YMCA: he was a former member of the Pine Grove Country Club and was a past president of the Chippewa Club. He was a former member of the First Lutheran Church, and at his death was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served, at one time, as Trustee.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife Jane; a daughter Marguerite J. Miller (Robert Lees) of Rockville, Maryland, a son A David (Maya) Miller of Port of Spain, Trinidad W.I.; two grandchildren, Andrew R. Miller and Kristjana L. Miller of Calgary, Canada; and a step-grandchild, Katya Miller of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He leaves two sisters in Seattle, Jean Perkins and Grace Wilson, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 25, 2004, from 4 – 6P.M. at the Jacobs Funeral Home. The Crystal Falls Masonic Lodge 385 will conduct a memorial service at 5:45 Wednesday, at the Funeral Home. Funeral services 11:A.M. on Thursday, February 26, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Iron Mountain, Rev. Michael March will be officiating. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
Memorials may be made to the Hiawatha Land Council of the Boy Scouts of America in Buck's memory. Cards may be received either through the funeral home or directly from to the family.
