Ronald "Ron" W. Vassar, 60, of Florence, passed away Friday, March 16, 2012, at Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain.
He was born October 28, 1951, in Iron Mountain, son of Marion (Johnson) Vassar and the late Donald Vassar. Ron grew up in Florence and attended school there. He worked with his father logging in the Goodman Timber. Ron served in the United States Army with the COC 4th Battalion 20th Infantry.
After being honorably discharged, Ron moved back to Florence, at which time he worked for the N.O.W. Paper Mill in Niagara as a Rewinder Operator until the mill closed. After which, he returned to the woods to continue what he loved.
Ron was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting wood, watching sports, going to the Norway Speedway, and especially enjoyed spending time at camp.
He is survived by his mother, Marion Vassar, Florence; two sons, Travis (Jamie) Vassar, Pembine, Trevor (Jennie) Vassar, Niagara; one daughter, Tara (Cody) Kampe, Houghton, Mich.; seven brothers, Lloyd (Josette) Vassar, Greendale, Wis., Lawrence (Lori) Vassar, Florence, Gary Vassar, Iron Mountain, Donald (Paula) Vassar, Florence, Rudy (Lisa) Vassar, Florence, Steve Vassar, Florence, Neal Vassar, Florence; four sisters, Vivian (Jim) Johnson, Alpha, Mich., Donna (Jim) Gunville, Niagara, Debbie (John) Joslyn, Thomasville, Ga., Mary (Matt) Dageostino, Commonwealth, Wis.; five grandchildren, Hunter, Corey, Parker, Gavin, Chloe; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Vassar in 2007.
The visitation will be Tuesday, March 20, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence. The VFW Florence Post No. 3635 will accord military honors 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Florence.
