Ronald George McMullen, age 80 of Florence, Wisc. passed away Friday March 31, 2006 at his home with his family at his side.
He was born November 16, 1925 in Manitowoc, Wisc. the 14th child of the late Oliver and Lillian (Peterson) McMullen. He was married to Lorraine Bruhel in 1948. She preceded him in death in 1966. He married Rita (Trama-Sjoberg) in 1969.
Ron resided at Faye Lake, Wisc. from 1927 to 1942 when he entered the United States Marine Corp at the young age of 17. He was involved in 3 battles - Majuro, Atoll and The Marshall Islands. After returning from the war, he worked for the Tobin Mine in Crystal Falls, Mich. and then went to Iron River and worked on sinking the Shaft for the Homer-Waucedah mine until 1963, when he went into contracting.
Ron was very civic minded and was a Little League Coach for many years, worked on getting the lights on the Florence Football field, was very instrumental on getting the Florence Medical Center built in Florence on which he sat on the board from the time it was built until it was sold. He supervised the building of the Florence County Resource Center and the remodeling of the Florence Courthouse. He was a master of his trade, building many places in the area. His last piece of art was Lakeside Bed & Breakfast, which he and his wife Rita, ran with love and pride. He loved sitting with family and friends telling stories of long ago, some true and many tales, but told with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face.
Ron was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He loved spending time on the rivers and out at Chateau Ridge with his friends.
His family and grandchildren were his "Pot of Gold".
Ron is survived by his wife, Rita; his children, Linda (Bob) Viste of Waupaca, Wisc., Michael O. McMullen of Hancock, Mich., Pam Counter of Spread Eagle, Wisc., Nancy St. Germaine of Lac Du Flambeau, Wisc., Sandra McMullen of Sister Bay, Wisc., Paul McMullen of Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren Ty(Angela) Counter and children Cade and Mia, Erik (Lindsey) Viste and children Emillia and Cole, Jeny (Dan) Shanoski and Tristen, Sarah Nayes and Brionna and Kenzie; Andrew, Alex, Ellie and Anna Viste, Seth Nayes, Jessie Ambrosia and Gabe McMullen, four sisters, Delores (Mike) Duginske, Kay Bjerke, Dorothy (Lee) Beyersdorff, Shirley Askelund; a sister-in-law, Georgia McMullen; and a special godchild, Brad Izzo.
Beside his parents and wife, Lorraine, Ron was preceded by brothers; Walter, Donald, and Oliver McMullen; and sisters Sylvia Auman, Vivian McMullen, Lillian Wells, Martha Gehlhoff, Thelma McMullen and Lola Gusky.
Visitation will be Monday, April 3, 2006, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence. The VFW Post 3635 will offer a Veteran's Memorial Service at 4:45p.m. Funeral Service will be 5:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Commonwealth Cemetery, Commonwealth, Wisc.
