Robert E. Sparks, 79, of Niagara, Wis., passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain. He was born August 23, 1929, in Channing, Mich., son of the late Curtis and Mary (Pittman) Sparks. Robert attended school in Channing and grew up there. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952, during the Korean conflict. Robert married the former Juanita Butterfield on November 15, 1952, in Iron Mountain. They have been living in Niagara since 1957. Robert worked for the City of Niagara for 10 years, before retiring. Robert was a member of the American Legion Cretton Tutas Post 136, Niagara. He, along with Juanita, served at the VA hospital as volunteers for over 17 years. Robert loved antique cars and spending time with his family and grand dogs. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, Memorial Day, and attending parades. He is survived by his wife, Juanita; one son, Robert (Sophie) Sparks, Niagara; three daughters, Cheryl (Aldo) Bennigsohn, Fairport, N.Y., Denise (Steve) Oien, LaCrosse, Wis., Trudy Sparks, Quinnesec, Mich.; four sisters, Lillie Nora, Norway, Mich., Bertha Sparks, West Virginia, Jessie Barba, New Mexico, Stella (Jim) Bishop, St. Ignace, Mich.; five grandchildren, Joshua Sparks, Brandon (Shelly) Bennigsohn, Bradley Bennigsohn, Brent Sparks, and Amber (Ethan) Miller. Robert was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcia Sparks; two brothers; and one sister. Robert Mueller will officiate. The Cretton Tutas Post No. 136 of Niagara will accord graveside military honors. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery.
