Robert R. Rahling, 91, of Crystal Falls, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
He was born September 16, 1922, in Waukegan, Ill., the only son of the late Chester and Della (nee Newman) Rahling. Robert married the former Lillian I. Jacobson in 1958.
Moving to Milburg, Mich. the family lived on a 40 acre fruit farm for 13 years before moving back to Waukegan. Robert attended Waukegan High School for four years and then worked for Fansteel Corporation in the Ramet Division for over three years. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in late October of 1942 and served a total of 44 months and was honorably discharged in February of 1946. Following his war time military service Robert was employed with American Steel and Wire Company for a time and then worked for OMC Johnson Motors as a tool and die maker before retiring after 36 years. Living an active life he helped build a house for his parents. He organized a fleet of four combines and cut wheat from Texas to North Dakota and cut grain in Illinois. They then moved to Crystal Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 1988.
Survivors include, his wife, Lillian Rahling, Crystal Falls; three sons, Robert Jr., David and John Rahling. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Chester Rahling.
Graveside services will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013, at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. The East Side Veterans Council will accord military rites.
