Richard "Honey" Schaal, 65, of Crystal Falls, passed away, Thursday, December 22, 2011, at his home. He was born September 23, 1946, in Crystal Falls son of the late Ernest and Helen (Kukura) Schaal. On June 17, 1972, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Florence, Wis., he married Janet Gruell. Richard was a graduate of Crystal Falls High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion Louis Bowman Post No. 87 and a Life Member of the Tufts-Rondon Post No. 2891 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Crystal Falls. He retired from Cleveland-Cliffs Mine as a mechanic working on heavy equipment in 1998 after 30 years and was the owner/operator of Rich's Small Engine Repair in Crystal Falls. Richard enjoyed playing horseshoes, taking walks, snowshoeing, and hobby farming by raising rabbits and chickens. He was especially fond of his grand-dog Molly and the family cat Shadow. Survivors include his wife, Janet Schaal, daughter Ginger (Joe) Vrancic Jr., all of Crystal Falls; other relatives and friends. Memorial Services will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011, at Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. Friends may call from 12:00 Noon until the time of services at the funeral Home. Rev. Micheal Laakko will officiate. Spring burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. The East Side Veterans Council will conduct a Pass-In-Review ceremony 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, offerings will be donated to the Tufts-Rondon VFW Post No. 2891 of Crystal Falls in Richard's memory.
