Iron Mountain:
Rena M. Anderson, age 95, formerly of 600 East Main Street, Iron Mountain, Michigan, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at the home of her daughter.
Rena was born on February 2, 1909 in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Anton and Angeline (Attocchi) DeMuri. As the eldest of nine children, Rena helped care for her younger siblings and also worked in the family owned candy store and tavern on Iron Mountain's North side.
She then moved to Chicago where she worked at the People's clothing store for many years. In the 1930's, Rena returned to Iron Mountain and married Bertel Anderson. Rena and Bertel then followed Ford Motor Company to Missouri, New York, and the Detroit area. Upon retirement, they returned to Iron Mountain where they enjoyed their camp, playing cards, and being with family. Bertel preceded her in death in 1967.
Rena volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital for many years and also was active in the Italian Women's Club. One of her greatest pleasures was spending time with her grandchildren. In the last several years, she enjoyed visiting the casino and meeting so many new friends. Her grandchildren knew her as Nona but her many acquaintances fondly called her Sophia, Gram, Lady Rena, and the Lady with the Friendly Smile.
Rena is survived by her daughter, Carol (Ken) Schultz of Iron Mountain. She also is survived by two brothers, Guido (Marie) DeMuri and Gildo DeMuri ; four sisters, Jennie Koller, Antoinette Kovochich, Adeline DeJulianne, and Doris (Jay) Constantini, all of Iron Mountain. Nona leaves behind her six grandchildren, Alicia Schultz, Kay Little, Kris Fletcher, Steve Anderson, Karen Meppelink, and Tricia Ostermeyer; daughter-in-law Helen Breidinger; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband Bertel, Rena was preceded in death by her son, Roger Anderson, in 1969, a brother Gino DeMuri, and a sister Mary Stockero.
