Raymond L. Swiss, 79, of Felch, Mich. and Good Hart, Mich. passed away Friday, May 9, 2014, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain, Mich.
He was born in Harbor Springs, Mich. on June 21, 1934, son of the late Stephen and Edna (Johnston) Swiss. Ray grew up in Good Hart, Mich. on his family farm. He graduated from Harbor Springs High School, Class of 1952. Ray was drafted into the U.S. Army on April 1, 1954, and was honorably discharged on March 8, 1957. He served in Hawaii as a Cryptographer. Ray married Patricia Gokee on July 31, 1959, and they resided in Kalamazoo, Mich. In 1970, they moved back home to Emmet County to raise their family. Ray drove truck for many different trucking companies, and in the mid-eighties, Ray went to work for K.B. Matz Trucking Company in Elmira, Mich.; retiring in April of 2014. They moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1998, to be closer to their grandchildren.
Trucking was Ray's passion, he estimated he had driven over 3 million plus miles in his career; he also enjoyed hunting, following the Detroit Tigers, spending time with his family especially time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pat; two sons, Stephen (Karen) Swiss, Felch and Brad (Nikki) Swiss, Republic, Mich.; one daughter, Gayle Urban, Gwinn, Mich.; one brother, Gerry (Joanne) Swiss, Harbor Springs; four sisters, Leta (Haney) Gregory, Traverse City, Mich., Shirley (John) Peckham, Lansing and Carol Fowler, Macon, GA., Ellen Morse, Jackson, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Katie, Ben, Sarah, Emily, Raymond, Rachel and Cameron; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Stutsmanville Chapel, 2988 S. State Road, Harbor Springs, MI. 49740. A Celebration of Life Service will take place Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. at the Stutsmanville Chapel. Rev. Ed Warner will officiate.
