Iron River- Raymond M. "Ray" Smith Jr., 84, of Bates Township, Mich., passed away Thursday, December 10, 2020, at his home. He was born September 14, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late Raymond and Nancy (Cullota) Smith Jr. Ray graduated from Lane Technical High School, class of 1955. He was united in marriage to Joyce Hammerschmidt on May 10, 1958. Ray worked for a pharmaceutical company for many years. He was a active member of the Golden K for 20 years and also a member of the Elks Club, Iron River, and the Engineer Club, Iron River. Ray helped with the Lions candy sales in Crystal Falls and was involved as a Boy Scouts Commission Leader. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Joyce Smith; one son, David Smith; two daughters, Kathleen Smith, and Elizabeth "Beth" (Tom) Soma; one daughter-in-law, Patti Smith; four grandchildren, David Smith Jr., Jaclyn Hollars, Samantha Meyer, and Tana Soma; and by one great-grandchild, Dominic Smith. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by one son, Alan Smith. In accordance with Ray's wishes, private family services will be held.
