Obituary

Raymond E. Novak, 95, of Florence, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the Golden Living Center, Florence. He was born February 2, 1915, in Topaz, Mich., son of the late Frank and Anna (Barta) Novak. Raymond moved to Florence in 1919, and attended Commonwealth and Florence schools graduating in the Class of 1935. He married the former Lois Swanson on May 29, 1941, at her parent's home in Florence; she preceded him in death on April 18, 2010. Ray and Lois moved to Chicago to work and resided there until 1945, when they returned to Florence. He worked as a machinist while in Chicago and later for Wisconsin Electric Company for 27 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Florence; member and past master of Hiram D. Fisher Lodge No. 222, since 1965; the Interstate Shrine; the Beja Shrine Temple, Green Bay; the Scottish Rite 32, Green Bay; Elks Lodge No. 700, Iron Mountain; President of Commonwealth Sportsmen Club for 26 years; Young at Heart, Florence; the Florence Historical Society; and the Commissioner for the Florence Utility since 1957. Ray was Elk of the year in 1992 and 1993; received the Super Senior Certificate in 1991, the WPPI Community Service Award in 2002, and the Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin Pillars of Public Power Award – Gold Category in 2001, for 44 years of public service. Raymond is survived by his four sons, Raymond (Pat) Novak, John Novak, both of Green Bay, Wis., Donald Novak, Niagara, Wis., Greg (Lisa) Novak, Florence; two daughters, Lori (Todd) Patterson, Florence, Lois Ann (Frank DeCleene) Johnson, Florence; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Mike Novak; a son-in-law, David Johnson; two brothers, Donald Novak, 1961, Frank Novak, 1981; and a sister, Alma Rudstrom, 1966. Visitation will be Sunday, May 30, 2010, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Florence. The Hiram D. Fisher Masonic Lodge No. 222 will conduct a memorial service 11:45 a.m. Sunday, May 30, 2010, at the church. The memorial service will be 12:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2010, at the church. Rev. Douglas Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Florence. A memorial will be established in Raymond's memory.
