Peter Schiavo, 78, of Crystal Falls, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Victorian Heights Assisted Living Housing, Crystal Falls.
Born on August 14, 1934, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Pietro and Elizabeth (nee Pedranzan) Schiavo, Peter was the last of 16 children.
In 1956, Peter was drafted and joined the US Navy. Although a Sailor at heart, he never forgot his Crystal Falls roots and made it back to his hometown frequently throughout his entire naval career. Serving honorably for almost 24 years in the Navy, he reached the exalted rank of Chief Petty Officer. His greatest achievement in the Navy, however, was meeting and marrying the love of his life, Betty, a Storekeeper Seaman at the time who was not afraid to ask him, "Hey, how about taking a lonely Sailor out to dinner?" During their 36 years of marriage, they traveled the world and were blessed with three children. After Betty's passing in 1997 and several years on his own in Virginia Beach, Va., he made the decision to return home to Crystal Falls in 2009. With Peter's passing, he's now with his best friend and lover again.
Peter would not want his friends and family to be sad about his passing, but to think about the good times spent with him and to "have another beer!" Always quick with a joke, his commentary on his own passing surely would be to say, "if I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself."
Peter is survived by, three daughters, Cynthia Schiavo, Alexandria Va., Donna Clark, Charleston S.C., and CAPT (USN) Sandra Schiavo, Kaneohe Hawaii; six sisters, Angeline "Angie" Mindok, Carmen "Mella" Korpi, Ida Nelson, Olga Cocco, Veronica "Prena" Malecha, Anita "Annie" Smith; numerous family members and friends. He is predeceased by his wife, Betty.
The visitation will be Thursday, August 30, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. There will be a Pass-In-Review ceremony at 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. There will be no cemetery burial, as Peter's wishes were a US Navy burial at sea.
