Obituary

Crystal Falls: Peter John Ropiak, age 91, of Crystal Falls, died Sunday, August 14, 2005 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 7, 1914 in Dunn, son of the late Peter J. and Antoninia (Cieuchta) Ropiak. On November 20, 1937 in Iron River he married Mildred Nelson. She preceded him in death. Peter was a lifelong resident of Crystal Falls and had worked at McNeil Mobil, Civilian Conservation Camps, the Geological Survey, and Prox Construction before starting a career with area mines and Inland Steel. He retired after 38 years as Captain of the Sherwood Mine. Pete played softball for the Iron River Red Legs team and was their lead batter at one time. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, rock collecting, loved being at camp and telling stories, listening to polka music, playing his harmonica and being with his grandchildren. Peter was an active member of the United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls for many years. Survivors include two grandchildren, Joseph P. (Kristy) Ropiak, Alpha, Kim (William) Verhoven, Alpha; seven great grandchildren, Devin Lind, Nicole Ropiak, Jonica Ropiak, Peter Ropiak, Krystal Verhoven, Mariah Verhoven, Bryanna Verhoven; one great great grandchild, Austyn Lind; one brother Joseph P. (Ellen) Ropiak, Jacksonville, Fla., and one sister, Lucille Peterson, Amasa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mildred Ropiak, one son, Melvin Ropiak and two sisters, Stella Dora and Frances McCook. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 18, 2005 at United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. Thursday until the hour of services at the church.
