Peter Leonardi, 89, of Florence, Wis., passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, Mich. He was born in October 14, 1917, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Louis and Laura (Pintarelli) Leonardi. He married Vivian DeMark on April 20, 1940, in Florence. Peter grew up in Alpha, Mich. and graduated from Alpha High School. He worked briefly for the Ford Motor Co., in Kingsford, Mich. Peter served in the US Air Force during WWII. After he was honorably discharged from the service, he came back to Florence and worked for Peter Demuri for a few years as a mechanic at the Ford garage. He later took a position as rural route carrier for the US Postal service in Florence. He was a letter carrier for 33 years, retiring in 1983. Peter was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence, serving as an usher. He was active as a Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader. Peter was a member of the VFW Post No. 3635, of Florence, Knights of Columbus, and was honored as Man of the Year of Florence County for his contributions to the community. He is survived by one son, Gary Leonardi, Iron River, Mich.; one daughter, Cheryl Leonardi, Aurora, Wis.; one sister Lois Lakis, Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren, Gary Leonardi, Jr., Darren (Norma) Leonardi, and Kristine Leonardi, all of Chicago, John (Casie) Leonardi, Madison, Wis., Marlo (Brian) Leonardi, Burlington, Wis.; and eight great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife, Vivian, Peter was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Ernest; three sisters, Rose, Odell, and Joyce. Visitation will be Saturday, May 26, 2007, from 8:30am to 10:30am, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated, Saturday, 10:30am at the church. Fr. Michael Betley will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Commonwealth, Wis., with military rites accorded by the V.F.W. Post No. 3635.
