Obituary

Paul Arthur Hintz, 92, of Norway, Mich., passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain. He was born September 4, 1916, in Zion, Ill., son of the late Fred and Margaret (Bley) Hintz. He was raised in Cunard, Mich., and Chicago, Ill., where he graduated from Tilden Tech high school. On June 1, 1943, Paul married Carol Anderson at the Hermansville Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on August 1, 2008. He worked at Kimberly-Clark Mill in Niagara in the wood room before retiring in 1971. Paul was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Norway, where he sang in the choir and served on various committees. He was also a member of the Michigan-Con Amateur Radio Club. He and his wife sang with the Swinging Singers. They were also members of the Norway Senior Center and the Niagara Senior Center. Paul and Carol were also involved with Bible studies to Pinecrest, Freeman, and Hyland Nursing Homes. Paul loved to travel, being the copilot on miles of road trips throughout the US, visiting almost every state. International travel took him to France and Saudi Arabia to visit his daughters. He had a spirit of adventure as well; hiking and camping the length of Isle Royale National Park in 1976 and walking the Mackinac Bridge for his 79th birthday. Survivors include, his son, Paul Hintz, Jr. (Carol), Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Cynthia (Peter) Balzola, Portland, Ore., Carolyn (Jean-Louis) Martinez, Kingsford, Mich.; and grandchildren, Michelle (Rick) Krewson, Italy; Anthony Balzola, Portland, Ore.; sister-in-law, Josephine Thiele, Ill; nephews and nieces , Charles (Ingrid) Thiele, Gene (Elizabeth) Thiele, Philip Thiele; Janet Thiele, Lawrence Thiele, Lowell Thiele. Paul was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Julie Hintz in 1979; brother, Fred Hintz, Zion, Ill.; step-brother, Emanuel Thiele, Antioch, Ill.; sister, Margaret Bourgeois, Norway. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at the Grace United Methodist Church, Norway. The memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. James Britt and Rev. James Danielson will be officiating. Memorials may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church, Building Fund-Sanctuary.
