Olympia M. Balzarini, 97, of Iron Mountain, passed away Friday, January 27, 2012, at Hyland Nursing Home, Iron Mountain. She was born April 14, 1914, in Iron Mountain, one of 14 brothers and sisters born to Carlo and Clara (Carlevato) Porta. On September 3, 1932, she married Angelo Balzarini at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death in 1994. Olympia worked for Colenso's for fifteen years before retiring. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Women's Guild, Dickinson County Hospital League, and Dickinson Area Paisano Club. She will be remembered fondly by her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews for her great cooking and warm hospitality. Her family was as important to her as she was to them. Olympia will also be remembered for welcoming an unexpected visit from her grandson Andrew and the Michigan Tech ski team. She fed them all on a moment's notice. Olympia is survived by her son, Donald (Carol) Balzarini, Prescott, Ariz.; her granddaughter, Angela, Denver, Colo.; grandson, Andrew and wife Christi of Mesa, Ariz., and great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Zane Balzarini, Mesa. She will be greatly missed by her sister Judy Mariani of Iron River and brother, Charlie Porta, Minnesota. Visitation will be Thursday February 2, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited Thursday, 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Rev. Fr. Raymond Valerio will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
