Nancy Jean LaFave, 60, of Iron Mountain, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, after a long and spirited battle with cancer.
She was born on March 10, 1947, in Iron Mountain daughter of James and Elsie (Monosso) Finn. In the summer of 1966, she married George Raymond LaFave in Milwaukee, Wis.
Nancy was a 1965 graduate of Kingsford High School. She obtained her Associate Degree from Bay de Noc in Accounting and held a variety of careers throughout her life which included operating R & R Ambulance Service and Yellow Cab Company with her life long partner Charlie Raper. Her most recent position was as the manager of the Iron River Branch of the Michigan Secretary of State Office. She worked for the State of Michigan for over 12 years, she truly loved her job and working with the community. Nancy also served on the Habitat for Humanity Committee and the 9-1-1 Committee.
She is survived by her loving mother, Elsie Finn, Milwaukee; her father, James (Pam) Finn, Hot Springs, Ark.; one daughter, Paula (Dan) Swartout, Iron Mountain; two brothers, James (Peachie) Finn, Norway, Mich., Danny (David Piszczek) Finn, Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren, Eric (Deyaert), Nate and Georjeana Swartout; nephew and nieces, Mike, Wendy and Candy (Tim) Brew; many great-nieces and great-nephews. She also leaves behind a very special friend, Mary Meyer, Iron Mountain.
She was preceded in death by Charlie Raper, her life long partner of 27 years.
Nancy's life was her family, especially her three grandchildren. "Grammie" did everything with them in mind. She also loved the woods, taking walks, caring for her plants and flowers and lunching with her friend Mary. The love and sacrifices she gave to her family will always be remembered and she'll be in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 5, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m., at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Rev. David Anderson will offer prayers at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. The funeral service will be Wednesday 11:00 a.m., at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain. Burial will be in Breitung Township Cemetery, Quinnesec, Mich.
