Mitchell Janchenko, 87, Crystal Falls, Mich., died Monday, December 24, 2007, at his home.
He was born October 26, 1920, in Summit, Illinois, son of the late Anton and Anastasia (Leonchik) Janchenko. On December 26, 1943, he married Elynor Wiolenty. She survives.
Mr. Janchenko was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. From 1946 until 1978 he owned and operated Jan's Inc., an industrial scrap iron and steel processing company. He was a police officer, village poundmaster, volunteer fireman and served as fire commissioner in Summit, Illinois for many years. Mitchell was instrumental in establishing the Argo-Summit Chamber of Commerce and served on it's Board of Directors for eight years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0735, life-member Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6863; Masonic Temple Lodge No. 1133, all of Summit; Medinah Shriner's Temple No. 25865, Addison, Ill, and the Scottish Rites - Valley of Chicago. Janchenko belonged to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 705, Chicago. He was also a life-member of the Sagola Sportsman's Club, Channing, Michigan.
Survivors include his wife, Elynor Janchenko, Crystal Falls; one daughter, Carol Janchenko, Crystal Falls; one brother, John (MaryJo) Janchenko, Summit, one sister, Olga (the late John) Rotan, Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Lillian (the late Sol) Mastro, Lombard, Ill., Mary (the late George) Janchenko; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Mitchell Janchenko Jr.; three brothers, Alex (the late Sonja) Bodel, Walter (the late Nadia) Bodel, and George Janchenko.
Visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be directed to the charity of one's choice.
